Perhaps my favorite topic to write on is when pop culture and politics collide. It happens a lot, as since 1960 American culture and politics can only be interpreted through a pop culture prism, rational thought and analysis being cast away long ago by the voting public.

I’ve been binge watching, a snow storm will do that to you, the recently ended excellent History Channel series “Vikings.” I won’t go into detail, but suffice it to say the show, taking many historical and factual liberties, follows the saga of a noted Viking family and their retainers during the 9th century.

Though, in this telling, Viking girls wear a lot of lip gloss, the women don’t age, and one man can singlehandedly build dozens of long boats in a fortnight.

There’s a plot line in the 5th season that follows that boat builder to Iceland, where he attempts to establish a utopian settlement devoid of Viking violence and revenge. But human nature and their cultural conditioning overcomes the pioneers and they succumb to mankind’s natural dark tendencies. Kind of a Viking “Lord of the Flies” story. The character, Floki, has tempted his gods with the hubris of trying to change man’s essential nature and for it, they have struck him down.

So how does this have anything to do with American politics? For over fifty years the Left, as evidenced by the Democrat Party, has used American society like Floki used his pioneers. By absurdly striving for utopian solutions on issues of race and class they have destroyed multigenerations of America’s urban poor and brought the political and social discussion so far left at its starting point that empirical evidence, logic, and reason are virtually rendered mute.

They have ignored William F. Buckley’s immortal dictum, “Don’t immanentize the eschaton.” Which means, don’t try to bring heaven to Earth.

We see it even today with the Biden administration. Most want a clean environment, but they are trying to build a complete Green society over the bones of the American working class. No sane person countenances bigotry. But Biden and the Democrats want to build a culture where past wrongs are totally righted by vicious bigotry against those who had nothing to do with those wrongs and certain demographic groups are given preference over others. Sexism is not something to be celebrated. Anybody, male or female, should be equal in front of the law. But the Left and the Biden administration are insanely attempting to change the very nature of gender and family by destroying the concept of gender itself and replacing with a dog’s breakfast of PC nostrums and quack sociology.

We can hope this will only be a short spasm until Republicans take the House in 2022 and put a stop to many of these dangerously naive and authoritarian Democrat programs. But the Democrats have been steadily accumulating this power for over fifty years. It will take a cultural Ragnarok to stop them now.
