What were you doing Sunday night? Relaxing with friends or family? Catching up on work for Monday? Maybe you went to bed early. If you were doing any of those things in certain upscale neighborhoods in Washington, D.C. on Sunday night you were interrupted by masked and hooded Antifa and Black Lives Matter thugs on your property, actually at your door or right outside your window, challenging you to come out in the street.

Shelby Talcott, a Daily Caller reporter, shot a video from Sunday night’s march through private property that showed the rioters chanting “No justice, no peace” and “Are you home, get into the street.” Rioters held signs that read “White silence is violence.”

The people in these homes are people just like you. Perhaps they’d been to church earlier in the day. Maybe they’d had a birthday party for a child or a grandparent at their home. They probably thought they were safe from the potential violence and mayhem that has engulfed other American neighborhoods and downtown areas for months now. But were they safe? Are you going to be safe if, or when, the thugs come to your window? Can you protect your property from Antifa? Can you protect your family from Black Lives Matter? It is a question many Americans are pondering today.

Now, as these D.C. neighborhoods have voted overwhelmingly Democrat for many years, there is a sense of schadenfreude at work here. As the fictitious New York City mayor in the prologue of Tom Wolfe’s “Bonfire of the Vanities” thought, did these people really think it wouldn’t come for them? Did they think appeasing the thugs with their votes would spare them? As Winston Churchill said to the appeasers of his day, “You were given the choice between war and dishonour. You chose dishonour, and you will have war.”

The president is relentless in laying this unrest exactly where it belongs: On the shoulders of the Democrats.

“When is he going to suggest bringing up the National Guard in BADLY RUN & Crime Infested Democrat Cities & States? Remember, he can’t lose the Crazy Bernie Super Liberal vote!” President Trump chimed on Twitter:

Trump’s criticism actually got both Kamala Harris and Biden to come out and condemn the violence, while of course blaming the president for it. Ah, I see. The miscreants and Bolsheviks in the streets all these months are actually all Young Republicans and therefore Trump supporters. Well of course! It all makes sense now! Their screamed obscenities at the president, their looting, arson, and destruction of American history was just a clever way of throwing us off their path. Those devious Republican youth!

Covering this topic recently has rung historical bells. Is this the way Bill Shirer felt watching the SA take to the Berlin streets in the 1920s and 30s? When the South started to mobilize against the Union in 1860, immediately after a presidential election that didn’t go its way, did Horace Greeley wonder what would become of his country in the next year? He likely did, as do most of us.
