Academy Award-winner Liza Minnelli spoke out on Sunday to deny reports that she has struck up a friendship with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle since they moved to Los Angeles.
The Sun reported that Minnelli was helping Harry “find his feet” in L.A. after he left the royal family to move there with his wife and 1 year-old son Archie. However, the 74 year-old Cabaret actress took to social media yesterday to say that this is not the case.
“While I wish them well, I have never met Prince Harry and Meghan. Any statement to the contrary is a complete fabrication,” Minnelli wrote on Facebook alongside a link to the article.
The Sun had claimed that Minnelli had reached out to Harry upon his move to California because of her friendship with his mother, the late Princess Diana. Minnelli and Diana were photographed together many times in the 1990s before the royal’s death in 1997, and the actress has been open about them being friends.
“I was lucky enough to count Princess Di as a friend,” Minnelli has previously said. “I was first introduced to her when she came backstage after a concert I did in London. “
“Then we’d bump into each other at premieres or events where she’d be the guest of honor,” she added. “We’d fall into conversation then we’d meet for tea…My instinct was to protect her. We talked about everything under the sun. She loved music.”
A source had claimed to The Sun that Minnelli had contacted Harry and Meghan offering to help them get settled in their new life.
“Harry has found the transition from the UK to LA very challenging at times, and lockdown hasn’t helped him establish himself yet,” the source said. “Liza reached out because she was close to Diana and offered her support. She’s been dealing with paparazzi for years, and knows the fame game. Obviously, Meghan comes from a theatrical background too, so it’s been great for the three of them.”
Harry and Meghan have spent the past few months living in the $18 million Beverly Hills mansion of Hollywood mogul Tyler Perry while they look for a home of their own in the area.
