Meghan Markle and her husband Prince Harry shocked the world earlier this year when they announced that they were stepping down as senior members of the British royal family. They then left the United Kingdom to move to Meghan’s hometown of Los Angeles, California, where they are now looking for a home.
Now, the reason behind this exodus from the U.K. has been revealed.
Vanity Fair reported that Meghan had missed her hometown and her mother Doria Ragland, who lives in L.A., during her time in the U.K. She struggled with being a royal from the very beginning, feeling isolated and uncomfortable with the lifestyle that comes with being a royal as well.
“She was convinced there was a conspiracy against her and so she basically put herself in self isolation when they moved to Frogmore,” said one friend. “I think she felt like an outsider from the start. This wasn’t the life she was used to and she wanted out.”
“One of the things Meghan struggled with was not earning an income,” another friend added. “She has always worked and I think she felt unfulfilled. Having financial freedom was a big part of them wanting to leave.”
Family tensions also played a role in what happened, with the royal family getting their first major clue that something was wrong when Harry and Meghan announced how happy they were feeling in an interview while on tour in South Africa.
“It was then when the family reached out and said, ‘Okay, how can we help’,” an aide explained. “William was the first to get on the phone.”
Unfortunately for the royals, however, this was seen as too little too late by Meghan and Harry. Thankfully, however, William and Harry have made amends in recent weeks after their father Prince Charles had to battle coronavirus.
“Hearing their father wasn’t well helped bring them back together and there is now more regular communication,” a friend said. “I don’t think it’s returned to everything being rosy but it is better.”
While Meghan is happy to be back home in L.A., Harry is now the one struggling, as he has had to move across the world from everything he knows and loves.
“It’s not been easy for Harry,” one of his friends said.“He had a much more established life in England and he doesn’t really know anyone in LA. I imagine he might be feeling a bit of what [Meghan] felt over in the UK—lonely and directionless.”
As for Meghan, royal expert Katie Nicholl firmly believes this has turned out exactly how she planned.
“The big plan, for Meghan at least, was always L.A.,” she said.
