You would think everyone was hyped for 5G wireless, but the parents at Lakeside Elementary School are fighting to get a new cell tower that just went up, taken down.

The cell tower was erected by AT&T and was recently installed “across” the street from Lakeview Elementary. AT&T says that the tower is currently a 4G tower, with no timeline of turning it into a 5G tower.

But the parents say they don’t care what the timeline is, they don’t want any cell tower so close to their child’s school, especially not one with 5G capabilities.

Leah Santa Ruiz has two children enrolled at Lakeview, and she’s adamant about not wanting the tower in place. “This is 150 feet from where they eat lunch and play; it’s too close.” Another parent, Philip Claessens, has a son attending the school, and a daughter joining in next year said, “Our kids shouldn’t be guinea pigs for this technology.”

Both parents are worried about potential health risks. Even though the San Diego County ordinance requires all cell phone towers to be at least 300 feet away from schools, that 150-foot difference is too close for comfort for concerned parents who claim radio frequency waves from the tower could endanger their children.
