President Trump just pulled a brilliant move, folks!
Instead of allowing the coronavirus pandamonium to ruin this country as it did for Italy, Trump is signing a “Buy American” executive order aimed at bringing more manufacturing for medical supplies back to the U.S.
White House trade policy adviser Peter Navarro said Monday that the administration was planning on issuing a “Buy American” executive order for medicine and related supplies by the end of the week.
“The essence of the order … is to bring all of that home so that we don’t have to worry about foreign dependency,” he told CNBC, arguing that too much of the supplies are dependent on foreign sources. “We’ve got face mask issues, goggle issues, things like that.”
Navarro indicated the order, first proposed last week, would be used to allocate emergency funds authorized by Congress to “flip the switch” in a U.S. facility in Virginia “so we can make stuff here and do it more cost-efficiently.” He did not indicate how much funding would be directed to the factory and in what form, or if other facilities were being considered [Washington Examiner]
This is fantastic news as it not only bolsters U.S. job numbers, but it would also make us less reliant on other countries for medical supplies.
As a matter of fact, the U.S. relies on foreign countries for medical supplies 70% of the time.
That’s absolutely outrageous.
“The essence of the order … is to bring all of that home so that we don’t have to worry about foreign dependency,” he said, adding that 70% of the ingredients used in advanced pharmaceuticals “comes from abroad.”
The increased demand for medical face masks due to the coronavirus, for example, demonstrates the challenges of relying on foreign supply chains, Navarro argued.
The departments of Veterans Affairs, Health and Human Services and Defense buy significant amounts of medical equipment, Navarro noted.
“We need to have them buy that from American producers on American soil,” he said. [CNBC]
This is a great move by Trump to help get the economy ahead and make sure Americans are receiving the best medical supplies.
He’s without a doubt, making Americans health and money a number one priority.
