Remember when Democrats told Americans abortion should be “safe, legal and rare”? Well, somewhere along the way, the “rare” part seems to have gotten lost in the political shuffle.
On Tuesday, Virginia voters approved a constitutional amendment protecting abortion rights, including certain abortions during the third trimester, when babies are approaching birth.
The saddest (and most disgusting) thing? According to the Associated Press, the measure passed overwhelmingly, receiving approximately 62% of the vote!
Former Democratic President Bill Clinton was actually the one who promoted the idea that abortion should be safe, legal and rare. And it was a position he publicly emphasized throughout his presidency.
Fast-forward to 2026, and Democrats are CELEBRATING constitutional protections extending into the final months of pregnancy.
Virginia’s amendment permits restrictions on third-trimester abortions but requires exceptions when a physician determines an abortion is medically necessary to protect the mother’s physical or mental health, or when the fetus is not viable. Mental health??? Seriously???!
Opponents argue those exceptions, particularly the mental-health provision, are broad enough to undermine meaningful restrictions on late-term abortions.
So what happened to “safe, legal and rare”? Somewhere between Bill Clinton’s promises and Virginia’s constitutional amendment, the Democratic Party seems to have forgotten that last word entirely. And now, instead of asking how society can protect unborn children, we’re watching politicians celebrate expanded abortion protections that reach into the final months of pregnancy. That’s not progress. It’s heartbreaking.
