Republican California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton has unveiled a rather revolutionary education proposal for the Golden State: Make sure students can actually read, write and learn in English.
During an appearance Sunday on Fox News’ The Big Weekend Show, Hilton said California schools should return to English-only classroom instruction.
“This is our country! We speak English here!” Hilton said.
Hilton’s broader education plan focuses heavily on basic academics. His campaign says only 47% of California students meet English-language standards and 35% meet math standards. His proposals include restoring phonics-based reading instruction, emphasizing third-grade literacy and publicly grading schools based on student proficiency.
Hilton, who faces Democrat Xavier Becerra in November’s race for governor, has also proposed expanding school choice and ending teacher tenure.
