Remember when President Donald Trump’s fixation on Greenland was treated like he woke up one morning, spun a globe and decided America needed another really big piece of real estate?

According to multiple media reports, the United States, Denmark and Greenland have reached a new security agreement that would significantly strengthen America’s military position on the strategically important Arctic island. The agreement is expected to be signed this week in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Trump has spent months arguing that Greenland is critical to U.S. national security as Russia and China expand their interests in the Arctic. And he’s been right, despite the ridicule of the Democratic Party and its cohorts in the media.

Under the new agreement described by Trump and U.S. officials, American forces would gain expanded, long-term military access to Greenland while U.S. adversaries would be blocked from establishing military bases there. Sensitive investments by adversaries would also face restrictions.

Trump says the arrangement gives Washington permanent authority to protect Greenland and American security interests.

So after months of eye-rolling over Trump’s push to buy Greenland from Denmark, the U.S., Denmark and Greenland are now preparing to sign an agreement addressing many of the security concerns Trump had been raising all along.

Funny how quickly yesterday’s punchline can become tomorrow’s foreign policy. Or in other words, Trump is usually right and his adversaries are usually wrong.
