Bill Gates spent decades helping put computers everywhere. Now he’s warning that the machines may be getting a little too good at their jobs.

According to a report in the Daily Mail on Wednesday, the billionaire Microsoft co- founder issued one of his starkest warnings yet in an essay, saying artificial intelligence (AI) could wipe out huge numbers of jobs, supercharge cybercrime and even make it easier for bad actors to create deadly diseases. Gates said managing AI’s risks should become the “world’s top priority.”

Gates predicts both white- and blue-collar workers could eventually find themselves competing with software and robots that don’t need lunch breaks, health insurance or weekends.

His proposed solution includes creating “human-reserved” jobs that governments deliberately protect from automation. He has also floated taxing AI and robots to make replacing workers a little less financially irresistible.

Gates also warns AI could help criminals conduct sophisticated cyberattacks, fraud and even bioterrorism by lowering the expertise needed to design dangerous pathogens. He says the tech industry cannot be trusted to police itself because there is simply too much money at stake.

So, yes, AI may cure diseases and boost productivity.
