The Midwest is gearing up for a round of sweltering temperatures. Across Facebook and local news, weather forecasters are warning of highs in the 90s with heat index values soaring even higher. Even Northern Lower Michigan is under an Extreme Heat Watch from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday evening, with “feels like” temperatures expected to reach 95 to 103 degrees.

Right on cue, the usual Leftist media headlines are blaming the upcoming heat on “climate change,” as if summer suddenly became a brand-new phenomenon.

The reality? Sane meteorologists say this week’s heat is being driven by a large heat dome – a strong area of high pressure parked over the central and eastern United States. It traps hot air, limits cloud cover, and combines with humid air flowing north from the Gulf of Mexico to produce dangerous heat index values. In other words, it’s a classic summertime weather pattern. It’s not anything surprising. Last year, Detroit recorded about 10 to 15 days of 90-degree weather, with Grand Rapids posting about the same. That’s pretty typical for Michigan. It’s called summer.

What’s funny is that just a few weeks ago, Michigan endured several stretches of below-normal temperatures. Oddly enough, the climate alarmists weren’t sounding the doomsday sirens then.

Do you remember when the Democrats’ narrative was all about “global warming”? After Climategate and a few embarrassing moments involving researchers getting icebound while documenting shrinking ice, the messaging quietly evolved into “climate change.” It’s smart marketing, really. Unlike “global warming,” “climate change” can explain just about anything.

Which brings us to an inconvenient little fact for the Democrats: the climate changes. It always has. It changed long before SUVs and plastic straws, and it’ll keep changing long after today’s headlines disappear. It even changes in my own backyard.

Hot weather in late June and throughout the summer isn’t breaking news. It’s why people own air conditioners, head to the beach, jump in swimming pools, and drink lemonade.

So do what people have always done during a summer heat wave: drink plenty of water, check on elderly neighbors, keep your pets cool, and remember. It’s been making people sweat for a very long time. It’s called summer.
