As America prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, some activist groups have decided the best way to honor the occasion is by organizing nationwide protests against the country.
The 50501 Movement is promoting an event on June 27 called “All of U.S. 250,” describing it as a protest against what it calls a “fascist regime” that is “destroying our democracy and erasing our history.” Instead of joining birthday celebrations, participants are being encouraged to march, rally, attend training sessions, and denounce everything from immigration enforcement to software companies.
Most people celebrate milestone birthdays and anniversaries with cake, fireworks, and maybe a little gratitude. The activists’ plan appears to involve signs, slogans, and declarations that America is beyond saving unless their preferred political agenda is adopted.
The group’s materials promote candidates who support abolishing ICE, expanding government programs, and other progressive priorities, suggesting the event is every bit as political as it sounds.
God only knows what they’re planning for the fourth of July. So here’s a suggestion for them: Maybe take a day off, Dems. America isn’t perfect. No country is. But after 250 years of surviving wars, economic crises, and countless political battles, perhaps one day of appreciation wouldn’t be too much to ask. Try celebrating the country instead of complaining about it and trying to tear it down.
Maybe celebrate the freedoms that allow you to protest in the first place. Or, failing that, just stay home and let everyone else enjoy the party.
