Remember when parents were upset because their kids (probably you) were using CliffsNotes so they wouldn’t have to read a book? Then along came Google, which was very helpful for kids who wanted to let computers do the research for them.

Now, according to a new report from Common Sense Media, nearly nine out of 10 teens and tweens have used artificial intelligence tools. According to the report, nearly 9 in 10 kids ages 9 to 17 (86%) use or interact with AI. 24% do so on a daily basis.

The report also says that among kids who use AI, 89% say they use it for fun or entertainment, and 85% use it for help with schoolwork or homework. Three in four kids (75%) also say they use AI to create things. Close to half (48%) say they use AI to help with schoolwork at least once a week, including 21% who use it for schoolwork every day. Teens are at least twice as likely as preteens to be using AI for schoolwork on a daily basis, with 12% of 9- to 12-year-olds saying they do, compared to 24% of 13- to 15-year-olds and 30% of 16- to 17-year-olds.

The findings suggest AI isn’t some futuristic technology waiting around the corner. It’s already here, sitting in homes and classrooms and on computers and in phones – helping with assignments and occasionally doing suspiciously large portions of them.
