First it was Aunt Jemima. Then the Washington Redskins got the boot. Now, according to a report in the Daily Mail, the next nominated target of the woke leftists appears to be the Jeep Cherokee.
The latest push comes from a woke law professor at Miami University who argues that using tribal names on consumer products amounts to cultural appropriation.
The debate isn’t entirely new. Jeep has long maintained that its vehicle names were chosen to honor and celebrate Native American people and their heritage. In response to criticism from the Cherokee Nation in 2021, Jeep said its vehicle names were “carefully chosen and nurtured over the years to honor and celebrate Native American people for their nobility, prowess and pride.”
For many Americans, the controversy feels like the latest stop on an endless leftist woke road trip through rebranding country. Sports teams, food brands, mascots, and now SUVs have all found themselves in the crosshairs.
The Cherokee name has been part of Jeep’s lineup for more than 50 years and remains one of the company’s most recognizable brands.
At this rate, don’t be surprised if somebody eventually decides the Grand Canyon needs a new name because it isn’t inclusive enough for small canyons.
