Just when you thought air travel couldn’t get any more chaotic and weird, along comes a humanoid robot to prove that yes, things can always get weirder.

According to the Daily Mail, passengers on a Southwest Airlines flight from Oakland to San Diego recently found themselves stuck on the tarmac for over an hour thanks to an “unusual passenger” named Bebop – a 4-foot-tall robot that was sitting in a window seat next to its human companion, Eily Ben-Abraham, who works for Elite Event Robotics.

The robot caused a delay because it was originally placed in an aisle seat which is against policy for “large” carry-on items. It also contained lithium batteries that exceeded the maximum allowable size.

The robot was eventually powered down and the flight went on but some onboard were not too happy after the delay caused them time and money because they missed connecting flights.

One passenger called the whole thing a “publicity stunt” and another wondered how the robot got through security when humans are endlessly searched. For some, the takeaway wasn’t just about one oversized robot, but about a system that seems to catch water bottles while missing a four-foot, battery-packed “passenger.” If this is the future of flying, travelers might want to start asking not just who’s in the seat next to them – but what.
