Call it the latest installment of political whiplash: unborn babies are apparently people now and “babies” – and not just a “fetus” or a “choice” to be made when moms want to kill them. No, abortion is not “reproductive healthcare” when you’re in front of the Supreme Court arguing that every illegal alien baby in a woman’s womb and born within the United States should receive American citizenship.

Yes, that’s right. Democrats change their language – and their messaging – when it suits them. On April 1, in U.S. Supreme Court arguments about birthright citizenship, the language took a noticeable turn. References to children born in the U.S. weren’t wrapped in the usual clinical phrasing. In fact, Leftist Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson used the word “baby” three times. The word “fetus” was not used at all. And it’s not being used by the Leftists on social media posting about wanting more and more illegal alien “babies” born in the country.

When the issue concerns expanding legal protections of illegal aliens, the language becomes humanizing. When the issue is abortion, the language distances itself from the “baby” actually being described as a “baby.” Same unborn child – two completely different descriptions.

Background: the legal case currently before the Court is Trump v. Barbara. At the center of the case is a challenge to President Donald Trump’s executive order attempting to deny automatic citizenship to children born in the United States unless at least one parent is a citizen or lawful permanent resident.

The dispute hinges on how to interpret the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment – specifically whether being born on U.S. soil is enough, or whether the phrase “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” excludes children of undocumented or temporary-status parents.

During oral arguments, several justices expressed skepticism about rewriting more than a century of precedent, particularly the long-standing interpretation established in prior rulings. A final decision is expected later this summer.

Chances are, Trump (and the rest of us) will come up short in this case. Several Republican- appointed justices, including Amy Coney Barrett and John Roberts, seem more comfortable playing it safe than making a bold constitutional call.

In the end, the language coming from the Left is inconsistent because they don’t really have any principles. When the goal is expanding citizenship, they suddenly talk about “babies” with rights and humanity. When the topic shifts back to abortion, those same lives get repackaged into throwaway fetuses and political talking points. Apparently, in today’s Democratic landscape, personhood isn’t a principle – it’s just a setting you toggle depending on the argument of the day.
