Grab your phones, Michigan. The state’s top law enforcement official has officially rolled out what critics are already calling an anti-ICE tip line (or snitch line), complete with an online form and a sympathetic ear.
On Wednesday, February 4, Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel announced a new reporting system inviting residents to submit complaints about federal immigration enforcement activity in Michigan – specifically actions taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
According to the Attorney General’s office, the form allows users to report “alleged misconduct” by ICE, including detailed descriptions of agents, equipment, vehicles, and even weapons involved. Videos and photos are welcome.
Anonymous submissions? Also welcome. Posting unverified claims on social media? Don’t do that – just send them straight to the AG instead.
Nessel says her office has already received more than 5,000 emails about immigration enforcement, which apparently justified launching a formal reporting portal during a roundtable with advocacy groups, clergy, and local officials who probably gave her a standing ovation for her targeting efforts against ICE.
“In Michigan, we do not, and will not tolerate harmful, illegal actions against our residents, and I will not hesitate to uphold the law. That includes investigating unlawful actions perpetrated by a federal officer in our state,” Nessel said.
The fine print, however, adds a twist: filing a report doesn’t start a lawsuit, doesn’t guarantee action, and doesn’t replace calling police or 911. In other words, it’s less a legal remedy and more a clearinghouse for complaints. And who knows what she’ll be doing with the information – because she doesn’t say. She DOES say the information can be shared with third parties (i.e. CNN, the New York Times and other Democrat politicians).
The Attorney General can dress up what she’s doing as oversight and accountability, but it really comes down to a taxpayer-funded snitch line aimed at federal immigration officers doing the inconvenient work of arresting criminal illegal aliens and deporting them. Democrats, naturally, object to that sort of thing.
