In a development that is equal parts watchdog reform and a meme-come-to-life, Michigan now officially has a DOGE.
On December 11, State Rep. James DeSana (R–Carleton) announced the launch of the Michigan DOGE Task Force, a Republican-led initiative inspired by national “Department of Government Efficiency” efforts and aimed at rooting out waste, bureaucracy, and whatever else keeps Lansing humming expensively without much to show for it.
According to DeSana, the task force will “shine a light on what’s broken,” cut red tape, and restore trust in government – a tall order in a state where trust has been missing longer than the road construction cones ever leave I-94.
The pitch is simple: government should work for taxpayers, not against them. Radical concept, right?!
The task force includes a lineup of GOP lawmakers who say they’ll listen to citizens, identify inefficiencies, and push reforms that actually save money – not just generate income and glossy reports. One of their areas of study is look at whether people receiving Medicaid and SNAP truly need the help.
Skeptics, of course, are already asking whether DOGE will actually bite or just bark. Michigan has no shortage of commissions, task forces, and blue-ribbon panels that promise accountability and don’t deliver much of anything.
Still, for taxpayers weary of wasteful spending, ballooning budgets, and government programs that never seem to end, the arrival of DOGE at least signals one thing: someone is finally asking where the money is going.
