When a European leader twiddled his thumbs and muttered about “meeting in a month or two,” President Trump definitely wasn’t on board to play the waiting game. In his exclusive Fox & Friends call-in interview on Fox News on Monday, August 18, Trump recapped how he barked back at a fellow leader who wanted to push negotiations out into the future: “A month or two!?” Trump bellowed. “You’re going to have another 40,000 people dead in a month or two – you have to do it TONIGHT.”
Trump refused to accept more delays and phoned Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday to arrange a bilateral meeting with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following his discussions with Zelenskyy and European leaders.
Trump laid it out in his Fox News interview about the meeting between the two, saying: “It takes two to tango.” Forget endless diplomatic tea parties like the Europeans are fond of. Trump’s method is more like “lock the doors until somebody signs.”
Trump didn’t mince words about NATO either. Ukraine joining the alliance? Off the table. But boots on the ground from France, Germany, and the UK? Sure, he says they’ll “front-load” it. America, though, won’t be playing border guard for Kyiv. His message was blunt: he’s stopping the bloodshed, not opening another U.S. front line.
Trump claimed that Europe finally “respects” America again, declaring the U.S. “the hottest country anywhere in the world” and when he made the call to the European group to come to the White House, they came running to help end the war.
Trump went on to say he’s ended seven wars and thought this one would be one of the easier ones but it’s turned out to be the toughest. “I’m just trying to stop people from being killed,” he told Fox News.
If there was one theme of the interview, it was Trump’s impatience with delay. While some diplomats were ready to schedule another round of polite chatter months away, Trump was dialing Putin and corralling Zelenskyy the same night.
Trump’s bottom line: a month or two isn’t diplomacy – it’s a body count. Tonight means peace talks; delay means coffins.
