If endorsements are any indication, Democratic insiders appear to be sending a message in Michigan: when the goal is beating Republican Mike Rogers in November, they’re putting their chips on Haley Stevens to be their U.S. Senate candidate.
Retiring U.S. Sen. Gary Peters is the latest establishment Democrat to abandon neutrality and endorse Stevens, joining Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Rep. Debbie Dingell and other party heavyweights rallying behind her. Peters had previously said he would stay out of the primary before reversing course Monday, July 13.

Meanwhile, Abdul El-Sayed’s corner looks very different. His biggest boosters are the party’s progressive crazies, including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who see the Michigan race as a test of the Democratic Party’s future – which they want to be dragged into communism.
No one in Democratic leadership is saying it outright, but the endorsement pileup for Haley raises an obvious question: What are they seeing? Internal polling with El-Sayed getting shellacked by Rogers in the general election?
The Michigan GOP issued a statement after Peters’ endorsement, saying, “The timing tells you everything – Senator Peters waited until the eleventh hour to endorse Congresswoman Stevens because establishment Democrats are shaking in their boots over the likelihood that Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, a terrorist sympathizer and phony physician, will capture their party’s nomination in less than a month.”
They go on to say, ”This endorsement is a Hail Mary attempt by a panicked political establishment desperately trying to stop communist candidates from eating their party alive.”
Internal polling isn’t public, but establishment Democrats clearly seem worried enough about November to line up behind the candidate they believe has the stronger shot in a statewide general election. Whether they’re right – or whether the ignorant and nutty Democratic voters have other plans – will be decided on Aug. 4. Or technically, whenever Michigan finishes counting the votes.
