Apparently, if at first you don’t succeed… keep swinging.
According to a report from The Hill, Senate Democrats once again failed to advance a War Powers resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s military authority over operations involving Iran.
Thursday’s 49-50 vote marked the 13th time the Senate has considered such a measure; Republicans have now blocked it on 12 occasions (one earlier nonbinding version did pass). Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) again broke with his party to oppose it, while three Republicans – Senators Collins, Murkowski, and Paul – crossed the aisle in support.
By now the routine is familiar: introduce resolution, hold speeches, complain about Trump, cast votes, lose, repeat.
Supporters argue Congress should reclaim its constitutional authority over decisions to send U.S. forces into hostilities. Opponents counter that tying the president’s hands during an active conflict sends exactly the wrong message to America’s adversaries.
For Democrats, the scoreboard still looks bleak. Twelve blocks and counting. Maybe they should take a hint. Even Groundhog Day eventually ended.
