President Donald Trump turns 80 on Sunday, June 14, becoming one of the oldest presidents to hold office in American history – and, in typical Trump fashion, he isn’t marking the occasion with a quiet family dinner and a sheet cake.
Instead, Trump plans to celebrate his birthday with a massive UFC event on the White House grounds as part of the nation’s ongoing America 250 festivities. The event is expected to draw thousands of guests in a specially constructed arena on the South Lawn. It’s also Flag Day.
As for where Trump ranks among the nation’s oldest commanders-in-chief, he’s at the top. By the time he completes his second term in January 2029, he will be the oldest president ever to leave office, exceeding the ages at which Joe Biden, Ronald Reagan and Dwight D. Eisenhower ended their presidencies.
Of course, not everyone plans to celebrate.
The anti-Trump “No Kings” movement has scheduled nationwide demonstrations on the same day, turning Trump’s birthday into a political counter-programming event. Yes, they’re protesting his birthday. But in reality, it’s just a marketing angle for them to schedule yet another anti-Trump protest. In other words, it’s the same protest we have seen since the first anti-Trump protest in 2017 (the Women’s March) the day after he was sworn in as president.
The timing is hardly accidental. Similar “No Kings” protests were held on Trump’s birthday last year, coinciding with Army anniversary celebrations in Washington, D.C.
So while Trump and his supporters celebrate the soon-to-be octogenarian’s birthday, opponents will be gathering in parks, streets and public squares to protest the very man whose birthday they’re helping keep in the headlines.
Trump’s 80th birthday appears destined to be exactly what many of his birthdays have been in the past: impossible to ignore. One side plans to cheer. The other side plans to protest. And both sides will spend the day – and probably the next day– talking about Donald Trump. Which is what he loves.
The leftists DO have a plan to try to squash his birthday plans, however. No big surprise. A “watchdog” group has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to stop the event from taking place on the White House grounds, arguing that the administration improperly approved the spectacle and is using public property for a private benefit. So far, the effort has failed to derail preparations, and the Trump administration has asked the court to dismiss the case. Still, because the plaintiffs are seeking emergency relief, a judge could theoretically issue a last-minute ruling in the days – or even hours – before the event, which the leftist Trump-haters would relish and celebrate.
The lawsuit will be decided by Judge Amit P. Mehta, an Obama appointee whose name is familiar to many Trump supporters because of his role in Jan. 6 cases. So if I were placing a bet today, I’d put the odds of the event being halted at better than 50-50. At this point, the biggest fight may not be inside the octagon but inside the courtroom.
