After days of ballot counting, Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman has officially secured second place in the city’s mayoral race, edging out reality television star Spencer Pratt and earning a spot in the November runoff against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass.
Raman, a progressive council member who was largely unknown outside Los Angeles political circles before the race, overtook Pratt as additional mail ballots were counted and counted and counted in the days following last week’s election.
Tallies to date:
Bass (Democrat): 34.3%
Raman (Democrat): 28.6%
Pratt (Republican): 25.8%
Pratt had initially held the second-place position on election night before seeing his lead disappear. Funny how that happens when Democrats need to find votes.
The outcome prompted plenty of social media commentary, with critics once again questioning California’s lengthy vote-counting process and pointing out that when it’s needed, Dems almost always seem to come up with the mail-in ballots they need to win their races. Yes, if Democrats count ballots long enough, they usually find the result they’re looking for.
Either way, Los Angeles voters now get a November choice between two Democrats who are going to send their city further down the toilet.
