Former Trump National Security Adviser and professional Trump critic John Bolton is reportedly set to plead guilty to retaining classified information, agreeing to pay a whopping $2.25 million fine as part of a plea deal with federal prosecutors.

Fox News has reported that Bolton is expected to plead guilty to (only) one count of retention of classified information. He could still face up to five years behind bars, although a judge will have the final say about that.

For years, Bolton positioned himself as one of President Donald Trump’s loudest Republican critics while portraying himself as the grown-up in the room. Now he’s learning that classified documents aren’t souvenirs you get to take home and share with friends and family members while working on your memoir.

Prosecutors originally charged Bolton with 18 counts related to retaining and disseminating classified information with the indictment reading that he shared “more than a thousand pages of information about his day-to-day activities as the National Security Advisor.”

The hypocrisy on display is hard to miss. The same political figures and media commentators who relentlessly hammered Trump over classified documents seem far less interested in the issue now that a well-known Trump hater has landed in legal trouble over classified material.

Bolton’s plea hearing is scheduled for June 26. Whether he gets any prison time in addition to a fine is unknown but he probably won’t. The situation, however, is a reminder that elitist arrogance and classified documents make a terrible combination. Karma may not always work on Washington’s schedule, but sometimes it does eventually show up.
