America is gearing up for its 250th birthday on July 4, and Republicans are ready to throw a full-blown patriotic block party complete with flags, fireworks, bald eagles and probably enough red-white-and- blue merchandise to bankrupt a Hobby Lobby. Democrats? Well…that’s where things get awkward.
As political strategists begin gaming out the upcoming “America 250” celebrations, some Republicans are openly wondering whether Democrats will spend the nation’s 250th birthday celebrating America at all – or instead debate whether the country deserves celebrating in the first place, sitting out the festivities entirely, or transforming the occasion into yet another round of anti-Trump protests.
The liberals who ARE planning to celebrate America’s birthday appear to be putting their own progressive spin on the festivities. According to reporting and announcements from the governor’s office, out in Gavin Newsom’s California, their America 250 plans will focus more on diversity, civil rights movements, immigration, labor activism, and environmentalism.
Translation: don’t expect many powdered wigs, George Washington salutes, tributes to “racist” founders, or enthusiastic chants of “USA! USA!” Instead, Californians will be getting a history lesson wrapped in a climate seminar with a side of identity politics.
But if anyone thinks ANY approach to celebrating America’s birthday under Trump will avoid controversy, recent events in Southern California suggest otherwise. According to the New York Post, a planned America 250 celebration at a junior high school in Chino Hills sparked intense backlash recently after some parents objected to a patriotic school assembly tied to the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday celebration.
The event, called “History Rocks 250,” was promoted as an interactive civics presentation connected to the broader America 250 initiative, but critics raised concerns over the involvement of conservative- linked groups such as Turning Point USA and the Heritage Foundation. Some parents complained they were not given an opt-out option for students and accused the district of lacking transparency.
Despite the controversy, the school pushed full steam ahead with a stars-and-stripes-heavy program that leaned hard into patriotism anyway. Students and faculty kicked things off with the Pledge of Allegiance before the choir launched into the national anthem. Sorry Dems.
The political fireworks surrounding America’s 250th birthday celebration isn’t stopping at local school assemblies, however. Trump’s White House “Task Force 250” has generated criticism for turning parts of the celebration into what complainers describe as a very Trump-branded spectacle. Historians and Democrats have complained about everything from planned UFC events on White House grounds to exhibits featuring AI-generated historical figures and partnerships with conservative organizations like PragerU. But who else are they going to partner with? CNN? MoveOn.org?
Beneath all the patriotic branding and America 250 marketing, the political fight seems less about the nation’s history and more about Donald Trump – with many Democrats caught awkwardly between celebrating America’s founding and continuing to frame the country itself as deeply flawed or even fundamentally racist.
So when America blows out 250 candles in a few months, the real question may not be whether the country celebrates at all, but whether half the political class shows up wearing party hats…or carrying protest signs complaining about Trump or the racist country they are ashamed to live in.
