Another mass shooting. Another flurry of headlines. And once again, people are noticing that some suspects get the full biographical deep dive (if they’re MAGA) – and others get the witness protection treatment.

When a suspect checks the “wrong” political boxes, members of the Leftist media suddenly develop a case of selective amnesia and are unable to report facts. Anti-ICE extremists, Antifa activists, Black shooters, killers who identify as trans – if the facts complicate the preferred narrative, coverage can shift from wall-to-wall analysis to “details are still emerging” and “we don’t know what the motive is” at lightning speed. It’s a total cover-up of who the suspect really is.

It’s not about reporting facts with these liars. It’s about protecting people. When the motive or identity of a suspect who commits a vile offense disrupts the storyline, expect a swift pivot to a different angle – or hardly any coverage at all. Transparency depends on who’s in the headline.

And there certainly appears to be a pattern emerging when it comes to the profiles of many recent shooters.

In coverage of the recent Rhode Island ice rink shooting involving Robert Dorgan, it became apparent pretty soon that the shooter (also known as “Roberta”) was trans. It took relatively minimal investigation by folks on X to figure it out. But CNN and MSYesterday didn’t want to tell anyone the truth and referred to him as a “person” and a “shooter.” MSYesterday didn’t mention one word about him being trans at all. At least CNN reported some quotes from people bringing it up.

The New York Times referred to him simply as a “shooter,” stating that the motive was unknown and describing the incident as stemming from a “family dispute.” While those details may be technically accurate, they don’t tell the full story – but the NY Times doesn’t want to tell the full story. And instead of calling him a “she” like they always rush to do when reporting about trans people, in this case, they are opting for the neutral “shooter” label so their coverage avoids delving into aspects of the suspect’s gender identity that they don’t want to confront or report on.

If identity, motive, or ideology matter in one case, they matter in every case. You don’t get to treat facts like a buffet – highlight what fits the narrative and ignore the rest. Consistency isn’t controversial. It’s Journalism 101. And it’s the bare minimum if you want to be taken seriously. What’s really on the line here is credibility. And judging by the selective outrage and narrative gymnastics, the Leftist mainstream media has none.
