According to the narrative of some, everything is perfectly normal in Dearborn, Michigan – totally calm, and absolutely not worth questioning. In fact, if you so much as raise an eyebrow at pro- American demonstrations in the city, you’re clearly the (Islamophobic) problem.

In his November 26 column, Detroit Free Press columnist Neal Rubin argues that Dearborn – which he says is often vilified by anti-Islam agitators as “the closest thing America has to Afghanistan” – deserves better than opportunistic provocateurs using its Muslim-majority population to stir outrage and rack up clicks.

Never mind the huge Arbaeen marches in Dearborn that look more like Iraq than America.

Never mind that the mayor of Dearborn told a local minister that he is not welcome in his city. Never mind the “Death to America” chants…

Never mind that in October, law enforcement thwarted a terrorist attack. FBI agents and the Michigan State Police (MSP) raided multiple homes in a neighborhood of Dearborn, Michigan at the end of October, arresting several individuals after allegedly thwarting a planned ISIS-inspired violent attack scheduled for Halloween weekend.

Regardless of all of this… the new rule goes like this: If you notice something… well, no you didn’t. The Muslims in Dearborn are just exercising their free speech rights and their freedom of religion – and you should probably apologize immediately for even thinking bad things about them.

Rubin scolds skeptics that “It’s Time to Leave Dearborn Alone,” while political leaders insist that anyone even mildly concerned about radicalized Muslim rallies and protests is basically auditioning for a hate-crime tribunal.

Rubin doesn’t give the side of the story about the “death to America” chants or the vile things said at Dearborn mosques or the terrorism-related arrests. His main concern is to relay his complaints about the “invaders” doing things like showing up in the city with packages of bacon and talking about the “the Islamification of Dearborn.”

Rubin points to the fact that the city has McDonald’s and Starbucks as evidence that there is no “Islamification” of the city. He says, “If some stealthy group is actually trying to instill sharia law and smother American culture, it needs a better marketing director.”

And even though Michigan GOP gubernatorial candidate Anthony Hudson switched his anti-sharia rally into a unity rally last month, Rubin still wants him to leave Dearborn alone too. That’s because Hudson dared to comment that he wants the Islamic call to prayer across the city by the local mosques to be quieter and not happen before 7 am.

At the end of the day, Michigan can keep insisting that everything in Dearborn is perfectly ordinary – that the marches, the chants, the raids, and the political tension are all just harmless expressions of cultural diversity – or it can finally acknowledge that ignoring uncomfortable realities won’t make them disappear.
