Georgia State Sen. Colton Moore announced Tuesday he will seek the Republican nomination for Georgia’s 14th Congressional District. The seat became vacant after U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., resigned effective Jan. 5, 2026, following a public rift with President Donald Trump over the handling of Jeffrey Epstein-related files.

Moore, 32, represents Georgia Senate District 53, encompassing rural counties in the northwest corner of the state that overlap with the 14th Congressional District. A graduate of the University of Georgia with degrees in political science and international affairs, Moore runs his family’s bulldozing and trucking business and works as an auctioneer. He entered politics in 2018 as the youngest elected official in his House district’s history before moving to the Senate in 2023.

Moore’s record includes early and aggressive challenges to perceived political opponents of Trump. In August 2023, days after Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis indicted Trump and 18 allies on racketeering charges related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election, Moore became the first state senator in the U.S. to demand Willis be defunded and impeached. He sent a letter to Gov. Brian Kemp requesting an emergency legislative session “to review and respond to the actions of Fani Willis,” citing concerns over the politicization of the justice system.

The push drew swift backlash from Georgia Senate Republicans, who suspended Moore indefinitely from their caucus in September 2023 for criticizing colleagues who refused to join the effort. “Today’s removal is a direct result of me calling on my Republican colleagues in the Senate to do their job,” Moore said at the time.

Willis was later disqualified from the Trump case by a judge in December 2024 over a conflict of interest involving her relationship with a special prosecutor, validating some of Moore’s allegations of misconduct.

Moore also drew attention in January 2024 for spotlighting illegal alien processing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Acting on a whistleblower’s tip, he visited a second-floor room in the domestic terminal where volunteers from the nonprofit Team Libertad assisted recently released Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees with travel arrangements. Moore filmed the scene, describing it as a “human trafficking operation of unimaginable size” involving “illegal aliens” under U.S. military guard.

The special election for the 14th District has not yet been set. By law, Gov. Kemp must call for the special election within ten days of the vacancy. Once the election is called, it must take place within 30 days.

Georgia’s 14th District, spanning 15 counties with a population of about 770,000, leans heavily Republican, and was carried by Trump by 30 points in 2024.
