The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – America’s free food subsidy – is about to ditch some fraudsters.
The Donald Trump administration, under the watchful gaze of Brooke Rollins at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has announced that every SNAP recipient (about 42 million of them) will need to re-apply for their benefits, citing a tidal wave of alleged fraud, abuse and benefits apparently being handed out to deceased people, people who are getting duplicate benefits, and people who no longer meet the criteria for the program.
Yes, you read that right. Millions who were told under Democratic leadership “you’re all good” might now be asked: “Prove you are poor.” And hopefully prove you are an actual citizen of the country.
The rollout plan? Still vague. When? How? What counts as valid proof? Hard to say. But the message is clear: the administration is ready to vanish fraud.
According to Fox Business, Americans “will need to demonstrate that their households still meet eligibility requirements to continue receiving benefits.” Gee…That sounds like… common sense?
Rollins said on an interview on Mornings with Maria, “Business as usual is over. The status quo is no more.”
