Move over Gavin Newsom, Gretchen Whitmer, Pete Buttigieg and AOC – you might have some new competition coming out of “right” field in the 2028 presidential race. Former Obama advisor and CNN commentator Van Jones, a voice of what has often sounded like “reasonable dissent,” has been busy weighing in lately with some common sense concerning topics like on Iran and the problems with the Democratic Party.
According to the Daily Mail, Jones took it upon himself to warn everyone recently, “I think progressives underestimate how dangerous Iran is” a position not often taken by liberals, at least not in public. Jones even stood up for women saying, “’Iran is not a normal country. Normal countries don’t blind women because they showed some hair.”
Seems like this guy has been popping up a lot lately, exuding truthfulness and common sense, which are rarities in the Democratic party.
After Biden’s underwhelming debate against Trump in June 2024, Jones was among the first to point out the obvious. He declared on CNN that Biden had “failed a test to restore the confidence of the country” regarding his competence. Jones, in tears, seemed heartbroken over the discovery, but, nevertheless, called a spade a spade.
In May of this year, Jones commented about Jake Tapper’s book “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again.” Jones said on CNN’s State of the Union, “Before we get out here and start trying to tell people why they should like us, we need to look in the mirror, reorganize ourselves, get bad people and bad ideas out of the way, and then we will be able to come forward in the midterm. Right now, we need to apologize to the American people that we were part of something that wasn’t on the up and up.”
Whether Van Jones will throw his hat into the Democratic presidential primary remains to be seen – as does whether the party would embrace a straight-shooter who doesn’t jump on board every time to spin the Democratic narrative.
At the moment, the far-left seems convinced it owns the party, especially after Muslim socialist Zohran Mamdani clinched the Democratic primary for NYC mayor. To be clear, Van Jones isn’t exactly a moderate – but compared to some of his fellow Democrats, he’s not completely off the rails. At least not all the time.
