In a move that has surely left the nation’s 350 million (legal) residents clutching their English dictionaries in relief, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order declaring English as the official language of the United States.
Yes, after nearly two and a half centuries, we finally have a president who has realized that a country founded by English-speaking colonists might want to make English its official tongue.
Trump’s executive order says “From the founding of our Republic, English has been used as our national language…Our Nation’s historic governing documents, including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, have all been written in English.”
This groundbreaking decision by Trump overturns a 2000 mandate from former Democratic President Bill Clinton, which required federal agencies and organizations receiving federal funds to provide language assistance to non-English speakers. Now instead, agencies can choose whether or not to offer services in other languages.
The executive order asserts that establishing English as the official language will make a more “unified and cohesive society.”
Americans can finally breathe easy knowing that the official language of their government matches the one they’ve been speaking all along.
