The thuggish FBI raid on the Trump home is an ominous development for the United States of America. This was a message to political opponents of the left: Oppose us and expect armed agents knocking on your door.

Yes, presidents have used federal power before to target political opponents. Wilson and his Palmer Raids, Kennedy and Johnson and their illegal wiretaps, and Nixon and his IRS and his other nefarious actions were blatant misuses of federal agencies.

But it has not been this overt since Wilson. A president and his DOJ have publicly flouted the US political system and have done so with brazen arrogance. Leaders of the Democrat Party have applauded their authoritarian move. What will this bring? How long will Americans tolerate this?

Is this a Rubicon? Can we go on pretending that Democrats will tolerate a loss of power? Has their recent armed raid against a political opponent widened the American political fault line to a chasm too wide and deep to close? Are we faced with a permanent dividing line that could have historic repercussions? Is there a peaceful and democratic way out? If not, what does the future hold?

This writer saw this coming several years ago and offfered a practical solution. I asked, can we survive as a nation with a house divided against itself?

Political analyst Will Cain asks the same question, “A day after the FBI’s raid on former president Donald Trump we are starting to see what a permanent national split looks like. A divorce. Nobody wants to say it out loud, but it’s true. And this is not simply a break between Democrats and Republicans. No, that’s too simple. What we are seeing is a divide between people who are willing to use the power of the state to silence their opponent and those who are unwilling.”

A high level source told the press about the raid, “There is no need for any of this,” saying the FBI “wouldn’t let the attorneys come in to watch the raid. They told them to leave.” Is this the America we know and love?

Trump, a legitimate victim of the raid, said, “After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate. It is prosecutorial misconduct, the weaponization of the Justice System, and an attack by Radical Left Democrats who desperately don’t want me to run for President in 2024, especially based on recent polls, and who will likewise do anything to stop Republicans and Conservatives in the upcoming Midterm Elections.” He is absolutely correct.

What will be the political fallout? The Republican base, the vast majority of it, is furious. This will motivate them to go to the polls in November with a big score to settle. By the thuggish actions of the Biden administration any subsequent or impending prosecution of Trump is now tainted by the mark of political persecution. If it comes to that, kindling could be lit.

After Pearl Harbor, the man who planned the raid, Imperial Japanese Navy Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, said, “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.” Democrats have taken a page from his book and ignored his warning. They will pay in November. The nation itself could pay a much larger price in the years to come.
