Through the Looking Glass was written in 1871 by Lewis Carroll as a sequel to the popular Alice in Wonderland.

It “describes Alice’s further adventures as she moves through a mirror into another unreal world of illogical behaviour, this one dominated by chessboards and chess pieces,” according to Britannica.

Well, we live in the political equivalent today, as tomorrow night the president of the United States will tell his fellow countrymen that the Republican Party is made up of “semi-fascist” elements.

He’ll do this knowing full well that when those “fascists” were in power two years ago there was a free press, free speech, and his own opposition party that drove them from power. How in the hell is that fascism?

Thus his very ability to give a speech in Philadelphia on Thursday night proves that Trump and his followers are not fascists, or the lot of Biden and his followers would have be in jail or worse for some time by now. But in their Looking Glass world, logic and reality mean nothing. Democrats will do or say anything to gain power. Their policies are semi-communist, their messages are so devoid of reason they are surreal.

Oh, but January 6th?! There’s Republican fascism in action! Really? Most fascists, let’s say Franco, plan a lot more efficiently than sending thousands of unarmed yahoos and wannabe play soldiers like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers to conduct a putsch. The assorted sissies and cretins who stormed the Capitol on January 6th couldn’t insurrect their way out of a dry cleaning bag, much less take over the United States. Not proof of fascism at all. Further proof of the rank stupidity of the populist hordes.

Nevertheless Biden, “Will speak about how the core values of this nation — our standing in the world, our democracy — are at stake,” a White House official confirmed. “He will talk about the progress we have made as a nation to protect our democracy but how our rights and freedoms are still under attack…will make clear who is fighting for those rights, fighting for those freedoms and fighting for our democracy.”

“It’s not just Trump,” he’ll say, “it’s the entire philosophy that underpins the — I’m going to say something: It’s like semi-fascism…MAGA Republicans don’t just threaten our personal rights and economic security, they’re a threat to our very democracy.”

The RNC responded, “Biden has pitted neighbors against each other, labeled half of Americans as fascist, and tarnished any idea of his promise of ‘unity.’ Families are left with a recession, high gas prices, and a nation on the wrong track,” RNC spox Emma Vaughn said in a statement. But she missed the essential point. Democrats feel no compulsion to say anything that has the slightest bit to do with reality. It’s past lies. It’s madness. They have ventured through the Looking Glass. Come November, the Glass may stare right back at them.
