Like a jilted teenager who can’t get over his ex, Donald Trump is obsessed with his 2020 election loss to the point of delusion. He seems to believe his disturbed sense of entitlement and martyrdom is the preeminent issue in American politics today. He is trapped in November 2020. It’s on a never-ending loop in his brain. Case in point, Mo Brooks.

Brooks is a Republican congressman running for an open Senate seat in Alabama. Brooks, at a rally with Trump last August urged the crowd to stop focusing on the 2020 election, to “put that behind you” and “look forward.” Gottta give Brooks credit for guts. He said it in front of Trump and a Trump crowd.

What was Trump’s response on Wednesday, seven months later? You guessed it. “Mo, you just blew the Election, and there’s nothing you can do about it…Very sad but, since he decided to go in another direction, so have I, and I am hereby withdrawing my Endorsement of Mo Brooks for the Senate.”

He continued, “Mo Brooks of Alabama made a horrible mistake recently when he went ‘woke’ and stated, referring to the 2020 Presidential Election Scam, ‘Put that behind you, put that behind you.’ ” Woke? Brooks has one of the most conservative voting records in Congress. He even spoke at the January 6th rally of last year when Trump instigated a riot that stormed the US Capitol.

But no matter. Brooks violated the holy of holies, he dared call Trump out to his face on his twisted obsession with a lost cause. Did Trump refer to any vital or even current issue when dropping the Brooks endorsement? Nope. Ukraine, inflation, gas prices, the border? Not quite. Why? Because Trump and Brooks probably agree on those issues. Well, maybe not Ukraine, as Brooks may be less of an isolationist than Trump has become.

Brooks responded to the bounce by saying that “there’s only one conservative option in this race, and I am confident that the people of Alabama will see that on Election Day…I repeat what has prompted President Trump’s ire. The only legal way America can prevent 2020’s election debacle is for patriotic Americans to focus on and win the 2022 and 2024 elections so that we have the power to enact laws that give us honest and accurate elections.” Brooks is exactly right. But it doesn’t matter because Brooks is running behind two other Republicans in the race and the Trump criticism of him will not play well in deep red and deep MAGA Alabama.

So our national spoiled brat has again entered a Senate race and made his wishes known. Of course he did it when Brooks was dying in the polls, not when Brooks made the crack last August. Trump is basically kicking a dead dog and hoping to look tough. He doesn’t. He looks and sounds loony tunes, as he has since November 2020.
