Mexico City, Mexico – Late last night, a subway train overpass collapsed onto the road below. According to officials, at least 23 people were killed, 70 injured, 50 were hospitalized, with 7 of them in serious condition.

Hundreds of first responders cordoned off the area as friends and family of those believed to be on the train gathered outside the perimeter, desperate for more information.

“There are unfortunately children among the dead” – Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum

The collapse happened on one of the newest of Mexico City subway’s lines, line 12. Line 12 goes deep into the city’s south side. It runs underground in the more central areas but then runs on elevated lines in the city’s outskirts.

It was a support beam that gave way as the train passed over it which caused it to crash onto the busy road, in the borough of Tlahuac, about 16 feet below.

There is now a crane on scene which is being used to hold up the train cars as the rescue operation switches to more of a clean up scenario.

“If there’s a need for an external investigation, there will be one. We will get to the truth and we will get justice.” – Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum

“What happened today in the Metro is a terrible tragedy. My solidarity with the victims and their families. Of course, causes must be investigated and responsibilities defined. I reiterate myself at the entire disposal of the authorities to contribute in whatever is necessary.” – Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard
