Sean Connery, the legendary actor who originated the role of James Bond in the 1960s, passed away on Saturday at the age of 90. That night, his widow Micheline, who was married to Connery for 45 years, spoke out to reveal what his final moments were like.

Micheline explained that Connery’s final months were blighted by dementia, which had taken a serious toll on him by the end.

“It was no life for him,” Micheline told Daily Mail. “He was not able to express himself latterly. At least he died in his sleep and it was just so peaceful. I was with him all the time and he just slipped away. It was what he wanted. He had dementia and it took its toll on him. He got his final wish to slip away without any fuss.”

Micheline, a 91 year-old Moroccan-French painter, met Connery at a golf course in Scotland in 1970, and she would go on to become his second wife.

“He was gorgeous and we had a wonderful life together,” she said. “He was a model of a man. It is going to be very hard without him, I know that. But it could not last for ever and he went peacefully.”

After Connery’s death, the last photo he ever took was released to the public. It showed Connery and Micheline celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary back in August, with him clasping her hand lovingly.

Connery’s death was confirmed to the BBC by his son Jason, who said that his father died peacefully in his sleep in the Bahamas after having been “unwell for some time.” He added that the actor “had many of his family who could be in the Bahamas around him” when he passed away overnight.

“We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time,” Jason said. “A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor.”

Connery is survived by his wife and son, as well as by millions of fans around the globe.
