Queen Elizabeth has never publicly worn a mask amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Now, a royal expert is speaking out to reveal why this may be.

Robert Lacey, author of “Battle of Brothers: William, Harry and the Inside Story of a Family in Tumult,”  pointed out that members of the Queen’s family, like Prince Charles and Prince William, have all worn masks “since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis in order to set a public example.” Despite this, the 94 year-old Queen has never been seen wearing a mask herself.

“The Queen’s thinking on this matter remains a mystery,” Lacey wrote for Vanity Fair. “The closest that anyone has come to explaining why Elizabeth II should not just ignore but apparently flout government guidelines is because she wants to show Britain a picture of the magnificent and mask-less times that lie ahead.”

He went on to point out that Buckingham Palace has yet to confirm this theory, saying, “Her Majesty is holding out for hope.”

The Queen may actually wear a mask on Sunday, however, as it is Remembrance Day in the United Kingdom. This is a holiday that is meant to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives while defending the U.K.

“So surely on Sunday we will see Her Majesty honor their sacrifice by wearing the mask that has become the symbol of our national determination to defeat this cruel and insidious enemy?” Lacey questioned. “She will also be flanked at the COVID-modified ceremony by several other members of the royal family, and on this national occasion, we can presumably expect that they will all be wearing their masks as well?”

This comes after another royal expert claimed that the Queen will step down from the throne after she turns 95 next year so that her 71 year-old son Charles can become king.

“I still firmly believe when the Queen becomes 95, that she will step down,” said royal expert Robert Jobson, according to Page Six.

Jack Royston, a royal reporter for Newsweek, agreed with him.

“I think she won’t want to,” he explained. “But realistically she will get to a point where she has handed over everything to Charles and then how do you look your son in the eye and tell him he is not going to be King?”
