Prince Charles have been the heir to the British throne longer than anyone else in British history, and when he finally takes the throne, he will be the oldest king to ever be crowned. Despite this, royal biographer Robert Lacey has spoken out to say that he does not see Charles stepping aside for his son Prince William to take his place as king.

“There is such loyalty and respect for the Queen [that] when we look to the future and say, ‘Who could duplicate that in the future,’ could it be King Charles and Queen Camilla?” Lacey said, according to Daily Mail. “Or would it much better be William and Kate, who are already the focus of enormous popularity and are clearly stepping into the role of future sovereign?”

“I myself don’t think [Charles] would willingly step down from the destiny he has waited [for] for so long,” he added.

This comes as rumors have been swirling that Queen Elizabeth may step down for her son to be king after her 95th birthday next year. Insiders spoke out this week to reveal what Charles’ plans are, should his mother actually step down.

“Charles will serve as king with Duchess Camilla by his side,” a source told US Weekly. “This is something he’s dreamed about his entire life — he sees it as his birthright, and Her Majesty would find it extremely difficult to deprive him of that.”

Charles, who is turning 72 this coming weekend, even has his first order of business as king planned.

“Charles has made it quite clear that he intends to slim down the monarchy and reduce the number of full-time working members of the family to those in the immediate line of succession,” said Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell.

Royal experts have predicted in the last few months that the Queen will step down after turning 95 in April.

“I still firmly believe when the Queen becomes 95, that she will step down,” said royal expert Robert Jobson, according to Page Six.

Jack Royston, a royal reporter for Newsweek, agreed with him.

“I think she won’t want to,” he explained. “But realistically she will get to a point where she has handed over everything to Charles and then how do you look your son in the eye and tell him he is not going to be King?”
