Last month, we reported that rumors are swirling that Queen Elizabeth may step down after her 95th birthday next year and allow her son Prince Charles to take the throne. Now, insiders are speaking out to reveal what the 71 year-old Charles’ plans are, should his mother actually step down.

“Charles will serve as king with Duchess Camilla by his side,” a source told US Weekly. “This is something he’s dreamed about his entire life — he sees it as his birthright, and Her Majesty would find it extremely difficult to deprive him of that.”

Charles, who is turning 72 this coming weekend, even has his first order of business as king planned.

“Charles has made it quite clear that he intends to slim down the monarchy and reduce the number of full-time working members of the family to those in the immediate line of succession,” said Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell.

Charles has been first in line for the throne virtually his entire life, ever since the Queen took the throne in 1952, when he was 3 years-old.

This comes as various royal experts have predicted in the last few months that the Queen will step down after turning 95 in April.

“I still firmly believe when the Queen becomes 95, that she will step down,” said royal expert Robert Jobson, according to Page Six.

Jack Royston, a royal reporter for Newsweek, agreed with him.

“I think she won’t want to,” he explained. “But realistically she will get to a point where she has handed over everything to Charles and then how do you look your son in the eye and tell him he is not going to be King?”

If Charles were to become king, his 38 year-old son Prince William will be next in line for the throne. He will be followed by his oldest child Prince George, who is currently 7 years-old.

The Queen is the longest serving monarch in British history, as she has been on the throne for an impressive 38 years. She is beloved by millions of people all over the globe, so her stepping down would come as shocking news to many indeed.
