Things are looking good, not great, in the Senate. Best we can hope for is 52, down one from before the election. The races in Georgia will decide the issue. We will likely come out of it with 51 and control.

Politico, updated: “Control of the Senate will come down to a pair of races in Georgia that won’t be decided anytime soon. As of right now, Perdue’s share of the vote is slightly below the 50 percent, hence the runoff. By the numbers: Sens. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) will both hang on to their seats. That puts the majority at 50-48, with Republicans having the upper hand. So that means Republicans need to win one of the races in Georgia on Jan. 5 in order to retain the majority, while Dems would need to flip both seats in order to make it a 50-50 Senate. Under that scenario, control of the Senate would go to the party in power at the White House. The big picture: The runoff races will likely become some of the most expensive, hotly contested, and consequential races in history, with both parties already preparing to funnel their resources and energy into battle. And it also means we won’t know the Senate majority for months.” Good analysis. Which means, we gotta take these races.

The Georgia race Politico mentions is incumbent Republican Senator David Perdue against Democrat challenger Jon Ossoff. The other Georgia Senate race is incumbent Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler against Democrat challenger Raphael Warnock.

Smart money has Purdue winning, aa he almost avoided a runoff. The Libertarians got over two percent. Most of them will move to Purdue, giving him enough to win. Loeffler is more problematic.

Total Republican votes before the runoff do not add up to fifty percent. She will need crossovers. But she’s been dogged with charges of enriching herself with inside Senate info. Warnock is black. So that vote will probably really come out for him. So have no doubt, Loeffler is in trouble. Likely scenario, we win Purdue and keep control by a whisker. We lose Loeffler. But all it then takes is a Romney or Murkowski to shaft us. Gives them too much power. Not good.
