Back in June, the singer Kelly Clarkson stunned her fans when she announced that she was filing for divorce from her husband of seven years, Brandon Blackstock. In the season premiere of her talk show on Monday, Clarkson opened up to fans about how her divorce has been going.

“As you probably know, 2020 has brought a lot of change also to my personal life,” Clarkson said. “Definitely didn’t see anything coming that came, but what I’m dealing with is hard — it involves more than just my heart, it involves a lot of little hearts.”

Clarkson and Blackstock are parents to River, 6, and Remington, 4, and she made it clear that her children are her top priority.

“Divorce is never easy. We’re both from divorced families, so we know the best thing here is to protect our children and their little hearts,” she said. “I’m usually very open and I usually talk about everything, but in this case, I will talk a little bit here and there about how it affects me personally, but probably won’t go too far into it because I’m a mama bear and my kids come first.”

Clarkson went on to talk about how she is coping personally.

“Everybody keeps asking ‘Are you ok?’ and I am — the answer is yes,” she said, adding that she has turned to music to get through this difficult time.

“When I got upset when I was a kid I had a problem saying how I felt and my mom told me to start writing,” Clarkson said. “And that’s actually how I get my feelings out, so I probably won’t speak about it too much but you definitely will hear it musically.”

“That’s how I became a songwriter. Music has always been my outlet to get through difficult times and this year I’ve been listening to a lot of music and I’ve also been writing a lot of music as well,” she continued.

A source close to Clarkson told Entertainment Tonight that she is focusing on her work now.

“Kelly is focusing on her show, moving forward and her kids,” the source said. “Kelly is pouring everything she has into her work to stay busy and focused and is trying not to think too much about her divorce, which is hard at times.”
