Yesterday, we reported that Ellen DeGeneres had opened the season premiere of her talk show with a monologue in which she apologized after months of current and former staffers coming forward to claim that she allowed a toxic work environment on set.

Unfortunately for DeGeneres, however, this apology has already come back to bite her, as former employees are coming forward once again to say that they weren’t buying it.

Ex-staffers did not like the fact that DeGeneres tried to mix humor and sarcasm into an apology that they feel should have been much more serious.

“Not only did Ellen turn my trauma, turn our traumas, into a joke, she somehow managed to make this about her,” one former staffer told BuzzFeed News.

“When she said, ‘Oh, my summer was great’ and that was supposed to be funny, I thought, ‘It’s funny that you had a rough summer because everyone was calling out all of the allegations of your toxic work environment and now you’re the one suffering?’” another former employee added

Other former staffers expressed unhappiness over DeGeneres’ “inappropriate jokes” that she peppered in throughout her monologue despite the fact that sexual misconduct allegations had been made against former producers on the show.

“When you’re talking about people who have accused her leadership of the seriousness of sexual misconduct, I don’t think it’s appropriate to have jokes in the monologue,” an ex-employee said.

At one point in her monologue, DeGeneres jokingly advised viewers not to brand themselves as the “be kind” person because it allows for little wiggle room. This did not go down well with former employees who had felt the host’s wrath behind the scenes, however.

“I don’t feel sorry that she’s in a s–tload of trouble because she branded herself the ‘be kind’ person,” one former employee said. “She’s acting like it was something she said in passing that just stuck with her. It’s not something that stuck with her, it’s not an accident. She went forward with this idea and this marketing strategy that was not true behind the scenes.”

“There’s nothing wrong with being the ‘be kind lady’ if you’re actually true to your word,” the ex-staffer continued.

Though former employees didn’t have anything nice to say about DeGeneres’ monologue, current staffers appear to have liked it.

“It’s kind of amazing that this is being discussed on her show,” a current employee said. “To actually go from an environment where nothing is said and everyone keeps their head down, to now when it’s the topic of her first show back is pretty amazing.

“Whether or not I believe in this message that she is saying is another issue,” the staffer added.

It remains to be seen how the public felt about DeGeneres’ monologue.
