Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are desperately “trying to build bridges with the Queen” after realizing that they need the royal family, according to a royal source.

Daily Mail reported that Meghan and Harry are trying to mend fences with the royals after Harry seemingly took a swipe at the British Empire last month by saying the history of the Commonwealth “must be acknowledged” even if it’s “uncomfortable.” The couple were singing the praises of the Commonwealth this week, however, saying it is an “honor” to be continuing Her Majesty’s legacy and that the Queen has succeeded in what she set out to do with the Commonwealth.

An insider said that it “dawned” on Harry and Meghan that “they need the Royal Family more than it needs them.”

“The Queen is fiercely protective of the Commonwealth,” the source said. “It feels like Harry and Meghan are finally trying to build bridges as I think despite their popularity in certain quarters… it has dawned on them they need the Royal Family more than it needs them.”

This is a very different tune from the one that Meghan and Harry were singing a month ago, however.

During a discussion about “justice and equal rights,” Harry said that the Commonwealth needs to follow others who have “acknowledged the past” and are “trying to right their wrongs,” while also admitting to having his own “unconscious bias.”

“When you look across the Commonwealth, there is no way that we can move forward unless we acknowledge the past,” Harry said.

“So many people have done such an incredible job of acknowledging the past and trying to right those wrongs, but I think we all acknowledge there is so much more still to do.”

Meghan agreed with him, saying that it is time for a “reckoning” in which people should be putting their hands up to “own” their past wrongdoings.

Tory MP Andrew Rosindell fired back by slamming Harry for his comments, saying that they were “disappointing” and that they would not “please” the Queen.

“I understand that Harry and Meghan have taken a step out from being members of the Royal Family,” he said.

“Therefore I’m surprised that he would be making comments like that. I don’t agree with what he is saying. We should look forward not back. As someone who has stepped out of the Royal Family he should focus on his own life and not get involved in politics.”

“That is not the appropriate thing to do,” Rosindell added.

“I’m not sure his grandmother would be too pleased either.”

It remains to be seen whether or not the Queen will forgive Meghan and Harry.
