Fans of the late NBA legend Kobe Bryant are outraged today after the 2020 MTV VMAs did not include him in the “In Memoriam” segment of the awards show.
Entertainment Tonight reported that during Sunday night’s VMAs, which were broadcast from New York City, there was an “In Memoriam” segment that honored stars who have passed away in recent months.
In introducing the segment, Travis Barker mentioned late rappers like Juice Wrld and Pop Smoke and noted that the segment would honor “other brilliant artists we lost.” However, not everyone included in the segment had ties to music, as Black Panthers star Chadwick Boseman was honored in it as well.
Fans have since been taking to Twitter to voice their anger about Bryant’s exclusion.
“Well hell if y’all gone show Chadwick show Kobe too. Kobe did music too. #VMAs,” tweeted one fan.
“Who at the #VMAs forgot to include Kobe Bryant in the In Memoriam section?!?” added another fan who pointed out Boseman’s inclusion, as well as that of late “Glee” actress Naya Rivera. “You added Naya and Chadwick, you weren’t sticking to just music.”
“How DARE you guys Not pay tribute to KOBE BRYANT!!!!” a third user wrote. “He is an Academy Award winner and Legend!!! And you choose to leave him out of your 2020 tribute! #BoycottVMAs #VMAs.”

Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash back in January along with his 13 year-old daughter Gianna and seven others. While Bryant was not included in the “In Memoriam” segment, he did appear to get saluted by rapper DaBaby, who kicked off his performance in Los Angeles Lakers colors.
This comes after NBA star LeBron James reacted to Boseman’s death on Friday by calling 2020 the “s—tiest year,” given the fact that we lost the actor and Bryant.
“It actually felt like we finally had our Black superhero, and nobody could touch us,” James said. “And to lose that, it’s sad in our community, it’s sad in our community.
“To lose the Black Panther and the Black Mamba in the same year, can all agree that 2020 is the s—tiest year — in my 35 years, it’s not even a question,” he added.
