It has long been known that Ghislaine Maxwell, the alleged madam of the late billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, had a close friendship with Prince Andrew from the time they were children. Now, journalist Anne McElvoy has revealed that Maxwell actually knew the late Princess Diana years before she met Andrew, only their relationship was not nearly as positive.

“Ghislaine, while herself on a pedestal of privilege, was armed with a self-confidence so bullet-proof that she could joke about ‘making Diana (later Princess of Wales) cry’ in a world where ‘teasing’ about everything from the wrong boyfriend to the wrong designer could come uncomfortably close to bullying,” McElvoy said, according to the U.K. Express.

Maria Farmer, who has accused Maxwell and Epstein of sexually abusing her, previously said that the 58 year-old British socialite “hated” Diana.

“Ghislaine’s like, ‘look, there we made her (Diana) cry, isn’t that funny? We hated Diana,'” Farmer recalled. “That’s what she said. I was like, ‘Oh my god, that’s horrible.’ They were very mean to her, like abusive, but they thought it was really funny. Very, very sick.”

Maxwell and Epstein spent years being invited to many royal events, including ones that would take place at official royal estates.

“Ghislaine and her friends were very strategic,” one of Maxwell’s friends later said. “She was a fixture on the London social scene and she would hang out with a group of women who were all pursuing dazzling marriages. They wanted to marry money, instead of an aristo, which had become unfashionable by then.”

A female source who was friends with Maxwell in the 1980s also talked about what she was like.

“Ghislaine ran with a fast crowd,” the insider said. “She was more like a man than a woman, and that’s why men liked her. She was sharp and witty, and a night owl. She always bought the most expensive clothes — but had absolutely no taste.”

Maxwell was arrested last month on six charges related to her allegedly grooming young girls for sex with Epstein, and participating in the abuse at times herself. If convicted on all charges, she is facing 35 years in prison. Maxwell has been remanded to federal custody at a New York City prison after a judge deemed her to be a significant flight risk, given her immense wealth and international connections.
