A father from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was just left heartbroken after the family vacation that he and his wife had been planning to Disney World for two years was ruined last week when they arrived at the Florida amusement park, only to be told that their disabled 7-year-old daughter would not be able to enter the park without wearing a mask.

Richard Ross and his family ended up going home half-way through their pre-paid eight-day stay because their disabled daughter could not leave their hotel or pool, as she is not able to wear a mask because of her condition.

The trouble started on August 6, when the Ross family arrived at the Magic Kingdom’s bus depot, assuming that their daughter would be allowed to go in without a mask due to the medical exemptions allowed by Orange County, which is where the park is located, since she is exempt everywhere in Pennsylvania. However, when they got there, a staffer told them that everyone must wear a mask into the park, and that no exemptions are allowed at all, according to The Blaze.

Ross became so upset that he pulled out his phone to record the rest of his encounter with the Disney worker.

“Can my daughter — who is autistic with sensory issues —enter your park without a mask because she medically can’t wear a mask?” he asked, to which the employee replied, “Sir, I apologize, I know you’re frustrated. At this time…at this time we ask that anyone entering our park …”

Ross interrupted him, saying, “Just answer the question: Are you refusing to follow the Americans with Disabilities Act laws?”

“Hey, we’re not talking about any of that right now, we’re talking about our [inaudible] to come into the park,” the worker replied. “If she comes into the park without a mask, we would refuse her entry, regardless.”

“It’s a disgrace,” Ross said afterwards of the way his family was treated. “For someone with sensory processing disorder, [wearing a mask] is literally torture to them. Their brain cannot process the signals it’s receiving — her heart starts pounding, she can’t breathe.”

In a second video Ross posted, he talked about how devastating this experience really was for his entire family.

“Listening to somebody tell you it’s okay to discriminate against your handicapped child, do you know how hard that is?” he said through tears. “Do you know how hard it is to hear someone say, ‘Well, it’s okay for us to tell your kid [that] because they’re different, that they can’t do it.”

Mimicking Disney, he added, “Now that you’ve paid all this money and you’re here — everywhere that you live in Pennsylvania when you have a medical issue you don’t have to wear a mask — but now that you’re here, thanks for your money, sucker. Your kid’s different, so you can sit in your room for a week.”

Ross lamented that he wasted thousands of dollars on the trip, none of which Disney has refunded him with. Disney has yet to offer any comment on what happened, despite frequent requests from the press.
