Fans of Meghan Markle were stunned to learn this week that she left her beloved dog behind in Canada because the canine did not like Prince Harry.
Prior to her marriage to Harry, Meghan had two dogs, Guy and Bogart. When Meghan moved to the United Kingdom, she brought Guy with her but left Bogart behind, reportedly because he was too old to fly. Palace officials appeared to confirm this, saying that Bogart was “living with friends,” adding that moving to the U.K. “would have lots of complexity to it.”
Now that Meghan has moved back to the United States, many assumed that she would reunite with Bogart, but this does not seem to be the case.
“Meghan adored that dog but the decision not to take him back was based on Bogart’s relationship with Harry,” an insider told the Sun. “Bogart never took to Harry when they spent time together in Canada. He didn’t like Harry. Meghan was very vocal about the fact it wouldn’t be fair to take him back full-time, given Bogart’s feelings for her husband.”
“Of course, her staff in the UK who knew about her decision found her statement quite strange, but they accepted it at face value because Meghan knows her dogs,” the source added.
Friends had previously said that Meghan treated Guy and Bogart like “her babies” while filming her former show “Suits” in Toronto, Canada. She even let them sleep in her bed, and she bought them expensive organic food to feast on.
“She bought them Union Jack dog jumpers to keep them warm when they were puppies,” an insider said. “She misses them when she is away and will even get someone to FaceTime her with them so she can talk to them.”
Meghan had previously opened up about her close relationship to Bogart.
“He’s my first dog ever. I didn’t grow up with dogs. I was in LA and I went to this dog rescue,” she explained. “So I saw him and I was sitting there with him and then Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi walk in. Now, I don’t know her but Ellen goes ‘Is that your dog?’. And I said, ‘No’ and she’s like, ‘You have to take that dog.’ And so I brought him home. Because Ellen told me to.”
She went on to say that she bought Guy to keep Bogart company.
“I started to see he loves the company of people, but just like I love the company of dogs, I don’t want to be around solely dogs all day so I realized he might like a companion,” Meghan said.
