“Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek has no plans to retire anytime soon as he continues to battle stage 4 pancreatic cancer. However, he did just reveal who his ideal successor would be, and the name certainly came as a surprise to his legions of fans.

The Sun reported that Trebek just said that when he’s asked who his successor would be, he usually says he would want 98 year-old television icon Betty White to take over his hosting job.

“I joke with the audience all the time and I say, ‘Betty White,’ because they want somebody younger, somebody funnier,” Trebek, who turns 80 tomorrow, said in an interview with “Good Morning America.”

As for White, it appears she might be very interested in the gig. Back in 2018, she admitted to being a fan of “Jeopardy!,” and even named Trebek as her television crush.

“I watch ‘Jeopardy!’ First, it’s such a good game and second, I happen to have a huge crush on the host, Alex Trebek,” White said. “But I don’t watch much TV.

Trebek added in his recent interview that though the decision for who would replace him as host of the popular game show isn’t his to make, he and White “have been friends for a long, long time,” and he likes to choose her when people ask.

However, Trebek made it clear that fans don’t have to worry about him retiring anytime soon. He said today that he’s getting ready to return to filming “Jeopardy!,” with a few changes in place to protect his health amid COVID-19.

“We’ve redesigned our set to separate the contestants and myself a little bit more from them,” Trebek said. “So we are taking all kinds of precautions. Our testing procedure now is done online.”

In addition, they will just tape two days per week, filming five episodes of the program a day.

We’ll do three and take a short break, and then do the last two. And we’ll see how that goes,” Trebek said. “And if it’s too much for me, we can always cut back a little bit, maybe do four a day.”

Despite the fact that he has hosted “Jeopardy!” for 36 years, Trebek said he has never gotten tired of it.

“It’s the best kind of reality television I feel. People watch it, and if they come up with one or two correct responses in that half hour, they feel pretty good about themselves,” Trebek said. “And that’s great.”
