The legendary singer Sir Tom Jones may have just turned 80, but he has no plans to retire anytime soon.
After turning 80 earlier this week, Jones said that he plans to continue his lengthy career as long as he is still breathing.
“I like birthdays. People say, ‘What is it like growing old?’ but I say, ‘What is the alternative?'” Jones told the U.K.’s Mirror. He went on to say that getting older is simply a fact of life, and he has no problem with the process of it because “the memories are tremendous.”
Though nobody could blame the iconic singer for stepping away from touring in his 80s, Jones has no plans to stop performing.
“I don’t want to stop as God has been good to me and my voice is still there,” he explained. “I want to do it as long as there is a breath in my body.”
This comes one month after Jones revealed that his 2020 tour had been postponed because of COVID-19, calling it “one of the shames” of being in lockdown during an interview with BBC Radio 2. He also described performing as his “lifeblood” and has now often found himself singing “around the house” in quarantine.
During his time in isolation, Jones has been reflecting on his decades-long career, and he fully intends to release another chart-topping track before his career ends.
“People know I’ve done Sex Bomb, or Delilah or whatever,” he said. “Not that I won’t do it again, there might be another Sex Bomb out there, you never know, I’m not ruling it out. I want to keep on singing for many years yet. I know my time is getting shorter because of my age, but how short it is I don’t know. God has been very kind to me.”
Jones first topped the charts back in 1965, and his career has not slowed down at all in the 55 years since then.
“To reach 80 and to have such wonderful memories and to be still doing it and still making a point, or trying to – thank you to everybody that has been with me, the audience,” Jones said after his birthday, according to BBC News. “You can’t express yourself properly unless there’s people there to listen to you.”
