Prince Andrew just got some very bad news when it was revealed that U.S. federal prosecutors have officially requested to interview him as they continue their investigation into the late billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

NBC News reported that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has issued an official request for Andrew’s testimony to the British government under a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty, which is effectively a subpoena. While Andrew has previously claimed that he was willing to cooperate with any probe into Epstein, prosecutors now say that he has actually not been cooperating at all.

“Contrary to Prince Andrew’s very public offer to cooperate with our investigation into Epstein’s co-conspirators, an offer that was conveyed via press release, Prince Andrew has now completely shut the door on voluntary cooperation,” said U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman.

Andrew has already fired back through his lawyers, who claim that he has offered to give his testimony on at least three occasions, and that U.S. prosecutors are giving an “entirely misleading account” in claiming he hasn’t been willing to cooperate.

“In doing so, they are perhaps seeking publicity rather than accepting the assistance proffered,” Andrew’s lawyers said in a statement. “Far from our client acting above the law, as has been implied by press briefings in the U.S., he is being treated by a lower standard than might be reasonably expected for any other citizen.”

Andrew was forced to step down from his senior royal duties last year after he was accused of having sex with the then-17-year-old Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who was trafficked by Epstein when she was a teenager. She has said that she was forced to have sex with the much-older Andrew, an allegation that he has staunchly denied. He also claimed that he had no memory of meeting Giuffre, even though he was photographed with his arm around her in Epstein’s mansion.

Epstein committed suicide last August in prison as he waited to go to trial on sex trafficking charges. Since then, prosecutors have continued investigation those who were known to associate with him. It remains to be seen whether they have found anything that could result in Andrew facing any kind of charge.
